In 2020, Disney’s The Mandalorian proved that LED volume walls could replace green screens entirely for cinematic virtual production. Five years later, the technology is mainstream — used in everything from Netflix series to live broadcast and music videos.
Why LED volumes won
Traditional green-screen workflows force actors to perform against an empty background, with the final environment added in post-production. The result often looks flat, lighting is hard to match, and actors struggle to give realistic performances without context.
LED volumes solve this by displaying the final environment behind the actors in real time. The camera sees the real environment, the actors see their virtual world, and the lighting bounces realistically off their faces and costumes.
The four critical specs
- Pixel pitch: P1.5–P2.5 for in-camera work. Anything below P1.5 is wasted resolution; anything above P2.5 is visible on camera.
- Refresh rate: ≥7680Hz to avoid scan lines and moiré patterns on camera.
- Color accuracy: ≥98% DCI-P3, with proper Rec.709 / Rec.2020 calibration.
- Brightness uniformity: ±2% across the entire surface — any hotspot looks like a flashbulb on camera.
Choosing a partner
Building an XR volume is a significant investment. Look for suppliers with broadcast-grade calibration equipment, in-house installation crews, and integration experience with major render engines (Unreal Engine, Notch, Disguise).
Our XR Series is purpose-built for virtual production, with refresh rates up to 7680Hz, optional Rec.2020 calibration, and curvature support up to ±15°.
